🌊 Flash Flood Warning — Kent & Sussex Counties, DE

ISSUED: 4:37 PM ET Mon Jul 6 | EXPIRES: 8:15 PM ET Mon Jul 6

What's Happening: Flash flooding is already occurring. Trained weather spotters reported thunderstorms producing heavy rain, with a vehicle stranded on a flooded roadway in Milford. Between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain have already fallen, with rainfall rates of 1.5 to 3 inches per hour continuing. An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible in the warned area.

Who This Affects:

  • Kent, DE
  • Sussex, DE

Locations that may experience flash flooding include Dover, Milford, Bowers, Big Stone Beach, Dover Base Housing, Rising Sun-Lebanon, Rising Sun, Frederica, Magnolia, Little Creek, Riverview, and Woodside East.

Expect flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses, as well as other drainage and low-lying areas.

What To Do:

  • Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Do not walk or drive through floodwaters — even shallow moving water can sweep away a vehicle or a person.
  • Move to higher ground if you are in a low-lying or flood-prone area.
  • Stay off roads until the warning expires and water recedes.

Why Now: Slow-moving thunderstorms are dropping intense rainfall rates of 1.5 to 3 inches per hour over ground that is already saturated from earlier rain, overwhelming drainage and pushing small streams out of their banks.
