Stanton, Delaware Severe Thunderstorm — June 23, 2024
On the evening of June 23, 2024, a powerful summer thunderstorm moved through northern New Castle County after a very hot and humid day across the Delaware Valley. Temperatures at nearby Wilmington reached the mid-90s, and the atmosphere supported organized thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, hail, and isolated rotation. As the storm approached Stanton, its structure became visually striking: a dark, layered cloud base spread across the sky, with ragged scud, a turbulent underside, and a heavy rain core descending just beyond the foreground. These images capture the storm’s dramatic arrival over parking lots, fields, neighborhoods, and tree lines. The scene shows the contrast often seen with strong summer storms: bright gray daylight on one side, a deep blue-black storm base overhead, and curtains of rain and wind-driven precipitation advancing behind it.
