Overview

As of 2026-08-14, the Delmarva bite is tracking like a late-summer pattern: warm water, decent inshore activity, and stronger fish holding where the structure, tide, and bait line up. NOAA NDBC buoy data shows Delaware Bay at 79.0°F, Long Island offshore at 77.9°F, and Cape May, NJ at 73.9°F, which fits the mixed report from DE DNREC: croaker and spot are dominating the inshore picture while tunas are still showing in the deep.

🌊 Atlantic & Surf

Confidence: good.

DE DNREC reported surf-caught spot, croaker, and kings from the beach through Old Inlet Bait and Tackle. That is the cleanest surf read in the bundle this week, even though the same report said jellyfish, skates, and dog sharks were making the beach bite a bit of a grind. The practical takeaway is simple: the surf is producing, but not every cast is clean, and anglers may need to spend more time sorting through bycatch to find steady action.

There were no bait specifics called out for the surf zone in the agency text, so keep the approach broad and match bait to what local shops are seeing in the wash. The report is strongest on species mix rather than a single presentation.

🟦 Delaware Bay

Confidence: good.

This was one of the clearest Delaware reports in the bundle. Patty at Captain Bones said not much has changed since last week, and the species mix backed that up: white perch are still available at Augustine Beach on bloodworms or grass shrimp, while catfish are being caught at Augustine Beach and along the shoreline down to Dobbinsville and from the banks of the C&D Canal on cut bait. That gives bay anglers a straightforward bait picture for the week.

Leipsic also stayed active. Steve at Smith Bait said striped bass from 20 to 24 inches have been caught in the tidal creeks on bloodworms or Fishbites, and the Woodland Beach fishing pier has been producing croaker and white perch on bloodworms. In short, the bay is giving up a little of everything, with bloodworms and cut bait doing much of the heavy lifting.

🟩 Chesapeake Bay (MD)

Confidence: limited reports this week.

MD DNR's fishing report was unavailable this cycle, so there is no fresh agency species list to quote for the Maryland side. Use the NOAA tide tables and USGS river data below as your working environmental snapshot, and verify local bait-shop reports before you run north or west for a specific plan.

Because there are no MD DNR fish callouts in this bundle, the Maryland zone is best treated as thin rather than blank. The tide windows at Cambridge and Annapolis are the most relevant saltwater cues available here.

🟨 Inland Bays

Confidence: good.

Indian River Inlet remains the most specific inland-water report in the bundle. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle said the night watch is still catching and releasing a larger class of striped bass on bucktails, plugs, and live eels. Very early mornings are also producing bluefish up to 10 pounds around the bridge with bucktails or metal lures.

By day, the report shifts to structure fishing: sand fleas or green crabs close to structure could produce sheepshead, triggerfish, or tautog, and flounder will take a minnow or a small jig allowed to work near the down-current side of structure. That is a useful mix for anglers who can fish the tide rather than the clock.

🟫 Rivers & Freshwater

Confidence: thin.

The freshwater notes were smaller but still useful. Patty at Captain Bones said Lum's Pond and Garrison's Lake had bass on minnows and soft plastics, and Steve at Smith Bait said snakeheads have been caught out of Garrison's Lake on surface frogs. Those are the only fresh-water species callouts in the bundle, so the inland bite looks serviceable but not broad.

Access notes also matter here: the Seaford fishing pier is closed due to unsafe structural findings, with anglers directed to the smaller pier at River View Park near the boat ramp. Griffith Lake's boat ramp remains closed until December 2027, so Haven Lake is the practical alternative mentioned in the report.
