USWW Delmarva FishCast — Nor’easter keeps most Delmarva reports thin; bluefish at Indian River Inlet on incoming tide

Overview This is the Friday main Delmarva FishCast for 2026-09-25, and the source bundle is dominated by a nor’easter that kept a lot of boats and beach anglers off the water. The bite mix still looks like late-summer to early-fall transition water, but weather and sea state were the main filters this week; there was no Tuesday mid-week lift in the bundle, so this snapshot leans heavily on the Delaware report, NOAA buoy/tide data, and USGS gauge readings.

The only clear species report was bluefish at Indian River Inlet on metal lures during the incoming tide. Everywhere else, the reports were either zero, unavailable, or too thin to draw much beyond a conditions read.

🌊 Atlantic & Surf Confidence: good.

DE DNREC’s surf and ocean notes were straightforward: the surf was effectively blown out by 14-foot waves and 40-knot winds, and the offshore side did not produce any boat traffic to the canyons because vessels could not get through the inlet. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle was the only local shop with a small amount of bait activity in the broader Atlantic zone, and that was limited to a customer planning to fish from the Cape Henlopen State Park pier.

From a method standpoint, there was no working surf pattern to lean on this week. The report supports a simple read: the Atlantic side was weather-limited, and anglers should treat it as a conditions-first zone until the sea lays down.

🟦 Delaware Bay Confidence: good.

The Delaware Bay was also weather-limited across the report chain. Patty at Captain Bones in the upper bay had nothing to report, Steve at Smith Bait in Leipsic said high winds and rough seas shut things down, and Lewes Harbour Marina reported that 7-foot seas in the bay kept the boats at the dock. That leaves no meaningful bait or lure pattern to carry forward from this week’s report.

For anglers planning around tides, the bay still deserves a look once conditions settle. The NOAA CO-OPS tide set at Lewes and Reedy Point gives usable windows, but this week’s report makes clear that tide alone was not enough to overcome the sea state.

🟩 Chesapeake Bay (MD) Confidence: limited reports this week.

MD DNR was unavailable this cycle, so there is no fresh Maryland agency fishing note to add here. That means the Chesapeake Bay section is mostly a tide-and-water check rather than a bite report.

The relevant tide points in this bundle are Cambridge and Annapolis, which give anglers a framework for planning launches and shoreline sessions. In the absence of a state report, keep the focus on wind direction, water clarity, and whether the next tide window lines up with a protected shoreline or marsh edge.

🟨 Inland Bays Confidence: good.

This was the one bright spot in the Delaware report. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle said bluefish were still being caught at Indian River Inlet on metal lures during incoming water, and that is the clearest species-method pairing in the bundle. The report did not mention size or abundance, but it did show an active bite for anglers willing to work moving water.

Rick’s Bait and Tackle had nothing to add, which suggests the bite was narrow and tied to the inlet flow rather than a broad inland-bay pattern. For now, the most defensible approach is bluefish at Indian River Inlet on metals during the incoming tide.

🟫 Rivers & Freshwater Confidence: thin.

Freshwater reports were quiet from the Delaware shop calls. Patty at Captain Bones had no freshwater report, Steve at Smith Bait in Leipsic had no freshwater report, and the only on-the-water note was an angler observed at the dam between the Broadkill River and Wagamons Pond who did not appear to catch anything.

The USGS gauges suggest mixed freshwater conditions rather than a single clear pattern. The Brandywine Creek at Wilmington was at 260 cfs with a gauge height of 8.54 ft. The Murderkill River at Frederica was at 2160 cfs, 64.9°F, and 4.81 ft. The Pocomoke River near Willards was 7 cfs at 4.52 ft, the Nanticoke River near Bridgeville was 28 cfs at 4.11 ft, the Choptank River near Greensboro was 17 cfs, 61.7°F, and 2.25 ft, and Tuckahoe Creek near Ruthsburg was 25 cfs at 0.60 ft.

Closing Conditions can change quickly, especially with a nor’easter in the mix and thin report coverage in several zones. Wear a life jacket, check the marine forecast, and look at weather and sea conditions before you go. Sources this week were MD DNR, DE DNREC, NOAA, and USGS. — US Weather Warriors 🌪️
