USWW Delmarva FishCast — Surf and inlet action lead Delmarva this week, with red drum, bay perch, and a sea bass regulation reminder

Overview As of 2026-10-09, the pattern across Delmarva is a late-season transition: mid-60s water in the nearshore Atlantic and Delaware Bay, unsettled weather offshore, and better results from the surf, jetties, and inlets than from boats. This is the Friday main report; if conditions shift mid-week, those changes tend to show up in the Tuesday-style updates when they are available. MD DNR was unavailable this cycle, so the clearest public signal comes from DE DNREC, NOAA, and USGS.

🌊 Atlantic & Surf DE DNREC's report points to the surf and inlet edge as the stronger bet this week. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle said drive-on access reopened on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Delaware Mobile Surf-Fishermen President Shaun Smith caught a 44-inch red drum at 3Rs Road; Jr. Griffith also landed a 38-incher there during a rainstorm with 10 to 15-knot northeast winds. The fish came on spot chunks on 8/0 or 9/0 circle hooks on fish-finder rigs during an incoming tide.

The ocean-structure side was mixed. DE DNREC noted that boats finally reaching structure on Wednesday, Oct. 7 found lots of black sea bass, but only a few over legal size. That is a useful heads-up for anyone targeting sea bass offshore or just outside the breakers: the fish are there, but the keepers were scarce in the report. Confidence: good.

🟦 Delaware Bay The lower bay produced a steady mix of white perch, small striped bass, and catfish. Patty at Captain Bones reported fish from Augustine Beach down to Dobbinsville, with bloodworms and Fishbites as the go-to baits for perch and stripers, and chunks of bunker for catfish. Catfish were also mentioned from the banks of the C&D Canal.

Leipsic stayed in the mix as well. Steve at Smith Bait said stripers and white perch were being caught under bridges over small tidal creeks and rivers, with peeler crab, bloodworms, and Fishbites producing. With Delaware Bay water at 66.6°F at buoy 44009, this is still a fishable shoulder-season pattern rather than a locked-in winter push. Confidence: good.

🟩 Chesapeake Bay (MD) MD DNR's fishing report was unavailable this cycle, so there is no fresh state-sourced Maryland Bay bite to lean on. That makes this a limited-confidence zone for now rather than a strong forecast. For anglers working the Chesapeake side of Delmarva, use NOAA conditions and local reports until the next Maryland update lands. Confidence: limited reports this week.

🟨 Inland Bays Indian River Inlet and the nearby rocks gave the clearest inland-bay action. Old Inlet Bait and Tackle said bluefish were caught on metal lures near the Inlet Bridge, depending on the day and current. From the rocks, sheepshead, triggerfish, and tog were taken on sand fleas and crab baits.

Rick's Bait and Tackle added that Massey's Landing produced croaker and tog at different times and tides, with sand fleas, crab baits, and bloodworms all working. This is the kind of mixed, structure-oriented bite that rewards changing baits rather than staying married to one offering. Confidence: good.

🟫 Rivers & Freshwater The freshwater side was smaller in volume, but there were still a few useful notes. Patty at Captain Bones said bass were caught out of local ponds on live minnows, swim shads, and chatterbaits. Steve at Smith Bait in Leipsic reported yellow perch from Garrisons Lake, Masseys Mill Pond, and Silver Lake in Dover on live minnows.

USGS river data supports a generally moderate-fall setup rather than extreme flow. The Choptank River near Greensboro was 60.1°F at 16 cfs, while the Murderkill River at Frederica was 65.3°F at 1,820 cfs. Confidence: limited reports this week.

Regulation Notes

  • DE DNREC's Oct. 7 ocean-structure update said boats found lots of black sea bass, but only a few over legal size. Verify current Delaware black sea bass season, size, and creel rules before harvesting.
  • ASMFC: no recent items touching Delmarva species.

Closing Conditions can change quickly on the Delaware coast, the bays, and the tidal rivers, so treat this as a snapshot rather than a guarantee. Wear a life jacket, check the marine forecast before launching, and keep an eye on the next NOAA and USGS updates. This report is based on DE DNREC, NOAA NDBC and CO-OPS, and USGS data; MD DNR was unavailable this cycle. — US Weather Warriors 🌪️
