🥵 Delmarva Weather Update — Friday, June 5, 2026
Air Quality Alert in effect for New Castle, Kent, and Inland Sussex counties plus the Delaware Beaches and Cecil County, MD through midnight tonight.
Today's Weather Story: Summer is making an early statement. High pressure sits firmly overhead, pumping in dry continental air under a mostly sunny sky and pushing inland highs into the low 90s. A westerly wind keeps the ocean breeze suppressed for most of the peninsula, though the immediate coast still benefits from cooler water temperatures. Expect a hazy, hot, and dry afternoon from Wilmington to Salisbury.

Active Weather Alerts:
- Air Quality Alert — New Castle, Kent, Inland Sussex, Delaware Beaches, and Cecil counties — through midnight tonight
- Sensitive groups (children, older adults, people with asthma or heart conditions) should limit prolonged outdoor exertion this afternoon
Severe Weather Outlook: SPC has no severe risk for Delmarva today — storms aren't in the picture under this dome of high pressure. For Saturday, SPC has a Marginal Risk focused on Wilmington, while the rest of the sampled points are in general thunderstorms. That means the closer-in northern Delaware area has the better setup for organized storms, while the rest of Delmarva is more in a lower-end thunder chance. WPC has not flagged a Delmarva-specific excessive rainfall concern.
Why This Setup: A strong upper ridge is locking in dry, downsloping westerly flow, which is why fire weather concerns and air quality have both ticked up. The cold front waiting to our west is the trigger for tomorrow night's storm chances.
Looking Ahead: The warmup peaks Saturday and Sunday with highs again in the low to mid 90s. Saturday night's cold front brings the storm threat, then briefly cooler and drier air settles in early next week.
Bottom Line: Hydrate, limit strenuous outdoor activity if you're sensitive to poor air, and enjoy the sunshine — tomorrow night's storms are the next weather to watch.
