🥵 Delmarva Weather Update — Friday, June 12, 2026

Heat Advisory in effect for New Castle and Cecil counties until 8:00 PM EDT, with afternoon thunderstorms also on the table.

Today's Weather Story: A dome of dangerous heat and humidity peaks today across Delmarva before a cold front breaks the pattern. Highs push into the mid-90s inland under mostly sunny skies, with light westerly winds doing little to take the edge off. By afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms fire along the approaching front, with a few capable of turning strong to severe. The immediate coast stays noticeably cooler thanks to a southwest sea breeze.

  • Wilmington, DE: Mostly sunny, PM storms possible — High 95°F, W 5–10 mph
  • Dover, DE: Mostly sunny, PM storms possible — High 96°F, W 5–10 mph

  • Chincoteague, VA: Sunny — High 85°F, SW 7–13 mph

Active Weather Alerts:

  • Heat Advisory — New Castle County, until 8:00 PM EDT
  • Heat Advisory — Cecil County, until 8:00 PM EDT

Severe Weather Outlook: SPC has placed Delmarva under a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms today, covering Wilmington, Dover, Lewes, Salisbury, Ocean City, Chincoteague, and Cape Charles. The main hazards will arrive with late-day storms as the cold front approaches. WPC also flags an excessive rainfall and flooding concern across the region, so localized downpours could overperform where storms train or stall.

Why This Setup: A potent combination of an approaching cold front, nearby low pressure, and a tropical moisture feed is loading the atmosphere with heat and humidity — classic fuel for late-day convection. An upper-level disturbance helps lift that unstable air, giving storms the kick they need to organize.

Looking Ahead: The front sweeps through early Saturday, ushering in drier and somewhat cooler air for a much more comfortable weekend start. Heat and humidity rebound Sunday before another round of storms arrives Sunday night.

Bottom Line: Hydrate, limit afternoon exertion, and keep an eye to the sky after lunchtime — heat is the headline, but storms will close the day.
