🌤️ Delmarva Afternoon Update — Thursday, June 18, 2026
SPC has nudged the Day 1 risk for Dover, Lewes, and Wilmington from slight chances up to a Marginal Risk this afternoon.
What's Changed Since This Morning: The big shift is across Delaware, where SPC now carries a Marginal Risk for Dover, Lewes, and Wilmington — an upgrade from this morning's general thunder wording. The Slight Risk remains anchored across the Lower Shore from Salisbury and Ocean City down through Chincoteague and Cape Charles. NWS Mount Holly has also issued a Rip Current Statement for the Delaware beaches, in effect through 8 PM, and the AFD flags a few stronger to severe storms possible later this afternoon.
Current Severe Weather Picture: SPC keeps a Slight Risk in play for the southern half of Delmarva — Salisbury, Ocean City, Chincoteague, and Cape Charles — with a Marginal Risk now extending up through Delaware. Damaging wind looks like the main hazard if storms organize this evening. WPC guidance also keeps an eye on excessive rainfall, so a few storms could drop heavy downpours over a short window.
Active Watches & Warnings:
- Rip Current Statement — Delaware Beaches, in effect until 8:00 PM EDT (NWS Mount Holly)
Through Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms remain possible into the evening, with highs already topping out in the low 90s inland — 95°F in Cambridge, 94°F in Salisbury and Georgetown — and southwest winds gusting near 20 mph. Storm coverage should taper after sunset, but a stray strong cell can't be ruled out before midnight.
Bottom Line: Stay weather-aware through the evening across all of Delmarva, especially if you're at the Delaware beaches where rip currents are the bigger immediate threat.
