🌤️ Delmarva Weather Update — Monday, June 22, 2026

Heads up: Flood Watch for New Castle and Somerset counties through 6 AM Tuesday. Beach Hazards Statement for Accomack and Northampton until 8 PM tonight.

Today's Weather Story: A muggy southerly flow is pumping moisture into Delmarva ahead of an approaching cold front and a nearby low, setting the stage for showers and thunderstorms by afternoon and into tonight. Inland highs push to 89–90°F from Dover south through Cambridge and Salisbury, while a stubborn onshore breeze keeps the immediate coast notably cooler. Heavy downpours are the headline concern, with severe storms possible as the front sags through.

Across Delmarva:

  • Wilmington, DE: Showers, then storms possible — High 85°F, SE 5–15 mph
  • Dover, DE: Showers, then a slight chance of storms — High 89°F, SE 5–20 mph
  • Georgetown, DE: Showers and thunderstorms — High 89°F, S 5–20 mph
  • Lewes, DE: Slight chance of showers, cool sea breeze — High 66°F, SE 10 mph
  • Cambridge, MD: Partly sunny, then storms possible — High 90°F, SE 7–20 mph
  • Salisbury, MD: Partly sunny, humid — High 90°F, S 5–18 mph
  • Ocean City, MD: Partly sunny, breezy — High 81°F, S 10–22 mph
  • Chincoteague, VA: Mostly sunny, breezy — High 81°F, S 10–23 mph

Active Weather Alerts:

  • Flood Watch — New Castle, DE and Somerset, MD until 6 AM Tuesday
  • Beach Hazards Statement — Accomack and Northampton, VA until 8 PM Monday (high rip current risk along the Atlantic beaches)

Severe Weather Outlook: SPC has Delmarva under a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms today, covering Wilmington, Dover, Lewes, Salisbury, Ocean City, Chincoteague, and Cape Charles. Damaging wind gusts and locally heavy rain are the primary concerns when storms fire this afternoon and evening. WPC's national rainfall guidance doesn't single out Delmarva, but the local flood watches make clear that training downpours could still pile up quickly in spots.

Why This Setup: A warm front lifting north and a cold front approaching from the west are squeezing deep Gulf moisture into the region, while an upper-level disturbance provides the lift to wring it out. That combination — humidity, instability, and a focusing boundary — is the textbook recipe for strong storms and flash flooding.

Looking Ahead: Tuesday quiets down to a General Thunderstorm risk as the front clears, then a more summer-like pattern builds in Wednesday night through the weekend with another front bringing storm chances late week.

Bottom Line: Plan around afternoon and evening storms, give the coast extra respect with high rip currents, and keep an eye on drainage-prone areas through tonight.
