🥵 Delmarva Weather Update — Wednesday, July 1, 2026

Extreme Heat Warning in effect for New Castle County through Thursday, July 4 at 8:00 PM EDT. Heat Advisory for Cecil County until tonight at 8:00 PM EDT. Extreme Heat Watches posted for much of the Eastern Shore beginning Thursday.

Today's Weather Story: A dangerous, multi-day heat wave is ramping up across Delmarva, with highs in the mid-to-upper 90s inland under a strengthening upper ridge. Southwest winds and building humidity will push heat indices well into oppressive territory, especially north of the C&D Canal. A stray afternoon thunderstorm can't be ruled out over northern Delaware as weak disturbances graze the region, but most of the peninsula stays dry and blazing.

Across Delmarva:

  • Wilmington, DE — Sunny with isolated afternoon storms, high 98°F, SW 5–10 mph
  • Dover, DE — Isolated storms early then sunny, high 96°F, SW 10 mph
  • Georgetown, DE — Isolated storms then sunny, high 93°F, SW 10–15 mph
  • Lewes, DE — Isolated storms then sunny, high 91°F, SW 10–15 mph
  • Cambridge, MD — Sunny, high 91°F, S 8–13 mph
  • Salisbury, MD — Sunny, high 91°F, SW 6–12 mph
  • Ocean City, MD — Sunny, high 85°F, SW 10–16 mph
  • Chincoteague, VA — Sunny, high 84°F, S 9–16 mph

Active Weather Alerts:

  • Extreme Heat Warning — New Castle County, through July 4 at 8:00 PM EDT
  • Extreme Heat Warning — Kent, Inland Sussex, Delaware Beaches, Kent MD, Queen Anne's, Talbot, beginning tomorrow through July 4 at 8:00 PM EDT
  • Heat Advisory — Cecil County, until tonight at 8:00 PM EDT
  • Extreme Heat Watch — Cecil, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, Inland Worcester, beginning Thursday through July 3 at 8:00 PM EDT
  • Extreme Heat Watch — Accomack and Northampton, Friday 10:00 AM through 8:00 PM EDT

Severe Weather Outlook: SPC has northern Delaware — including Wilmington, Dover, and Lewes — in a General Thunderstorms risk today, meaning any storm that fires should stay below severe limits. No categorical severe risk is posted for Delmarva on Day 2, and WPC has not flagged Delmarva for excessive rainfall.

Why This Setup: A strengthening upper-level ridge is baking the Mid-Atlantic while a distant cold front and tropical moisture feed lurk to the west, allowing just enough instability for a stray northern storm. Translation: heat is the dominant story, with the more active weather holding off until later in the week.

Looking Ahead: Thursday and Friday look even hotter, with all-time record highs on the table across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. More widespread afternoon and evening storm chances return by Friday and into the holiday weekend.

Bottom Line: Treat today as a serious heat day — hydrate early, limit outdoor exertion after midday, and check on neighbors, kids, and pets.
