🥵 Delmarva Weather Update — Saturday, July 4, 2026
Extreme Heat Warning in effect for most of Delmarva until 8 PM (9 PM in Cecil County); Heat Advisory for Maryland Beaches until 8 PM.
Today's Weather Story: A dangerous heat wave peaks today across Delmarva, with heat indices approaching or exceeding 110°F away from the immediate coast. A cold front approaches from the west late in the day, firing scattered strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Damaging winds and localized flash flooding are the primary threats before the front finally breaks the heat Sunday into Monday.

Severe Weather Outlook: SPC has northern Delmarva, including Wilmington and Dover, under an Enhanced Risk for severe thunderstorms today, with damaging winds the main concern as storms fire along and ahead of the incoming front. Central and southern Delmarva sit under a lower but non-zero threat. For Sunday, an SPC Slight Risk covers essentially all of Delmarva from Wilmington south through Chincoteague. WPC does not flag a specific excessive rainfall risk for the peninsula, though any slow-moving cell could produce localized flash flooding.
Why This Setup: A stalled boundary and approaching cold front are running into a hot, humid airmass juiced by a nearby upper-level disturbance — a classic combination for high-end heat by day and organized severe storms by evening.
Looking Ahead: The front sags through overnight, dropping humidity and temperatures noticeably for Sunday and especially Monday. Additional strong to severe storms remain possible Sunday before the pattern quiets.
Bottom Line: Cancel or shorten outdoor Fourth of July plans during peak heat, hydrate constantly, and have a shelter plan for evening fireworks — storms could arrive fast and hit hard.
