🌤️ Delmarva Afternoon Update — Monday, July 6, 2026
Flood Watches now posted for New Castle, Sussex, Somerset, Northampton, and Cecil counties as slow-moving storms train across the region.
What's Changed Since This Morning: The big development this afternoon is the issuance of Flood Watches covering a large swath of Delmarva. NWS Mount Holly hoisted the first watch at 2:11 PM for New Castle, Sussex, Somerset, and Northampton counties, followed by NWS Baltimore/Washington adding Cecil County at 2:23 PM. SPC Day 1 and Day 2 severe outlooks remain a Marginal Risk with no upgrade — the primary threat continues to be heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding, not widespread severe wind or hail.
Current Severe Weather Picture: SPC maintains a Marginal Risk on Day 1 covering the southern Delmarva, including Salisbury, MD and Cape Charles, VA, with Day 2 keeping Cape Charles under a Marginal as well. The AFD from Wakefield emphasizes that widespread slow-moving showers and storms are the flooding concern, particularly in urban areas and spots with poor drainage. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue firing through the evening hours.
Active Watches & Warnings:
- Flood Watch — New Castle, Sussex, Somerset, Northampton counties until 8:00 PM EDT tonight
- Flood Watch — Cecil County until 12:00 AM EDT (midnight)
Through Tonight: Expect additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms into the evening, with the flash flood threat highest through about 8 PM in Delaware and the southern Eastern Shore. Highs today topped out in the low-to-upper 80s — 89°F at Cambridge and Salisbury, 87°F at Georgetown — with light and variable winds doing little to move storms along quickly.
Bottom Line: Turn around, don't drown — repeat downpours through this evening can flood roads fast, especially in urban and low-lying spots.
