🌤️ Delmarva Weather Update — Friday, July 17, 2026
Air Quality Alerts are in effect across nearly all of Delmarva through midnight tonight due to Canadian wildfire smoke.
Today's Weather Story: A thick plume of Canadian wildfire smoke is parked over Delmarva today, hazing out the sky and holding highs a touch below what a mid-July sun would normally deliver. High pressure keeps rain off the table for essentially every sampled point, with light north-to-northeast winds nudging the smoke around rather than clearing it. Expect a milky sun, reduced visibility, and air that feels heavy even without much humidity.
Across Delmarva:
- Wilmington, DE: Smoke, high 89°F, NW 5 mph
- Dover, DE: Smoke, high 90°F, N 0–5 mph
- Georgetown, DE: Smoke, high 90°F, NE 0–5 mph
- Lewes, DE: Smoke, high 85°F, E 5–10 mph
- Cambridge, MD: Smoke, high 91°F, N 6 mph
- Salisbury, MD: Smoke, high 89°F, NE 6 mph
- Ocean City, MD: Smoke, high 81°F, NE 9 mph
- Chincoteague, VA: Smoke, high 84°F, NE 10 mph
Active Weather Alerts:
- Air Quality Alert — New Castle, Kent, Inland Sussex, Delaware Beaches, Talbot, Caroline, Queen Anne's, Kent (MD), Cecil, Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset, Inland Worcester, Accomack, Northampton — through midnight tonight. Sensitive groups (children, older adults, anyone with heart or lung conditions) should limit prolonged outdoor exertion.
Severe Weather Outlook: SPC has Delmarva's southern tip — including Salisbury, Chincoteague, and Cape Charles — in a General Thunderstorms area today, meaning any storm that fires stays below severe limits. The rest of the region is quiet. WPC does not flag Delmarva for excessive rainfall today. The bigger severe headline is tomorrow: SPC has placed a Slight Risk across essentially the entire peninsula for Saturday.
Why This Setup: An upper-level disturbance and an approaching cold front will start tapping tropical moisture by Saturday, but today the airmass is dry enough — and the smoke layer thick enough — to suppress convection and shave a few degrees off highs, especially north.
Looking Ahead: Smoke lingers into Saturday morning before showers and thunderstorms ramp up Saturday afternoon and evening, some producing locally heavy rain in the warm, very humid airmass. Storm chances hang on into early next week.
Bottom Line: A hazy, hot, rain-free Friday — take it easy outdoors if smoke bothers you, and get outdoor plans done today before Saturday's storms roll in.
