🌤️ Delmarva Afternoon Update — Wednesday, July 22, 2026

New Flood Watches just posted for the Lower Shore and Virginia Eastern Shore through tonight and into Thursday.

What's Changed Since This Morning: NWS Wakefield issued back-to-back Flood Watches at 2:37 PM covering Wicomico, Somerset, Inland Worcester, Sussex, Accomack, and Northampton. SPC continues a Slight Risk over the southern Delmarva — Salisbury, Ocean City, Chincoteague, and Cape Charles — with the afternoon AFD flagging torrential rainfall potential capable of scattered to numerous flash flooding instances on the Eastern Shore later today. Northern Delmarva PoPs remain modest, so the flood and severe threat is decidedly south-weighted.

Current Severe Weather Picture: SPC keeps the southern half of Delmarva in a Slight Risk for severe storms today, with the northern half under a broader marginal/general thunder threat. The bigger story is rainfall: Wakefield's discussion highlights torrential downpours and flash flooding potential from the MD/VA Eastern Shore southward this afternoon into evening. Salisbury (PoP 71%) and Chincoteague (69%) are the wettest sampled points; Wilmington (22%) and Dover (25%) stay mostly quiet.

Active Watches & Warnings:

  • Flood Watch — Wicomico, Somerset, Inland Worcester — until midnight tonight (NWS Wakefield)
  • Flood Watch — Sussex (DE), Accomack, Northampton — until noon Thursday (NWS Wakefield)

Through Tonight: Showers and storms continue firing across the Lower Shore into the evening, with locally heavy rainfall the main hazard and an isolated severe storm possible in the Slight Risk zone. Northern Delmarva sees only spotty activity before things wind down overnight; highs top out near 86°F with southwest winds 10–15 mph.

Bottom Line: Watch the sky — and the roads — from Salisbury south through Chincoteague tonight, where flash flooding is the primary concern.
