🌱 US Weather Warriors GrowCast — Tuesday, June 30, 2026

Dangerous heat dominates Delmarva today with widespread Extreme Heat Warnings, Watches, and Advisories in effect.

Today's Weather Snapshot: Highs run 82-96°F across the peninsula, hottest north toward Wilmington. Mostly rain-free with low PoP, though isolated thunderstorms are possible. Winds near 10-16 mph, breeziest along the coast. Overnight lows near 69°F give little recovery from the heat.

Soil & Recent Rainfall: Two-inch soil temps run 68.8-75.8°F across six DEOS stations. No measurable rainfall in the past 24 hours. Topsoil is generally dry, with DLAU flagged on the dry side.

Best Outdoor Work Window: Work before 9 AM today. Heat and thunderstorm potential make midday and afternoon hours unsafe.

Planting & Transplanting: Soil temps at 68.8-75.8°F are well above the 60-65°F threshold for warm-season transplants. But the rule call is Delay — heat stress is High and new transplants will struggle to establish. Hold tomato, pepper, and squash sets until the heat trend breaks.

Watering & Irrigation: Despite dry topsoil at some stations, hold off on heavy irrigation today given the storm chances and rule guidance. If you must water, target early morning at the root zone to reduce evaporation loss.

For Gardeners: Prioritize shade cloth, deep mulch, and morning hand-watering of established beds. Skip transplanting and pruning until the heat dome relaxes. Harvest ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash early in the day before quality drops.

For Farmers & Growers: Field workability is Poor — heat, elevated storm risk, and gusts near 15-16 mph narrow the spray window. Move heavy labor to pre-dawn hours and watch crews closely for heat illness. Hold hay cutting if storms threaten your area; soil access is fine but timing isn't.

Looking Ahead (6-10 day signal): CPC 6-10 day leans near normal on temperatures; drought-free across DE, MD, and VA.

Bottom Line: Treat today as a heat-survival day — protect people, livestock, and recent transplants, and shelve major fieldwork.
