Wet soils and an elevated thunderstorm risk make today a wait-and-watch day across Delmarva.
Today's Weather Snapshot: Lows in the mid-60s to mid-70s, highs from 81°F at the coast to 86°F inland. Mostly dry north, but PoP climbs to 53% down at Cape Charles as a boundary lingers south. Winds near 12-15 mph. Dewpoints high — humidity was running 85-100% at DEOS sites this morning.
Soil & Recent Rainfall: 2-inch soil temps ran 74.8-80.2°F across six DEOS stations. 24-hour rainfall topped out at 1.34" (DSND), with all reporting sites logging wet topsoil. Expect saturated ground, especially in southern Delaware.
Best Outdoor Work Window: Morning is your best shot before storm chances rise this afternoon — aim before 1 PM north of the canal. Heavier field work is better pushed to Monday or Tuesday once soils drain.
Planting & Transplanting: Soils are plenty warm for anything you'd still be setting out, but the ground is too wet to work cleanly — delay transplants and direct seeding until the topsoil firms up.
Watering & Irrigation: Skip irrigation. With 0.3-1.3" already down and more rain in the WPC picture, soils are recharged; no irrigation needed through at least Tuesday.
For Gardeners: Scout tomatoes and cucurbits for early blight, downy mildew, and septoria — these humidity and leaf-wetness numbers are prime disease weather. Stake and tie anything leaning before the next round of storms. Hold off on side-dressing nitrogen; it'll leach with the next downpour.
For Farmers & Growers: Field access is poor and spray windows are narrow with elevated storm risk and 15 mph winds. If you have cut hay down, this pattern isn't your friend — plan around Monday morning at earliest. Watch low spots for standing water and note where drainage needs attention.
