Small Craft Advisories are up across Delaware Bay and much of the Chesapeake as NW winds ramp behind a cold front.

Today on the Water: SCAs are in effect for Delaware Bay and multiple Chesapeake zones, with peak gusts near 25 kt expected this afternoon and evening. Northwest winds build behind a cold front, kicking up a short, steep chop on the bays. Scattered showers possible.

Atlantic Coastal Waters (Lewes → southern VA coast): NW winds 5 to 10 kt this morning, shifting N 10 to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt this afternoon. Seas 2 to 3 ft with a S 3 ft swell at 8 seconds underneath. Chance of showers early.

Delaware Bay: NW 5 to 10 kt with gusts to 20 kt early, increasing to around 15 kt with gusts to 25 kt this afternoon. Seas 1 ft or less rising to around 2 ft by afternoon. SCA in effect until 6:00 PM EDT.

Chesapeake Bay & Delmarva-facing Waters: N winds 10 to 15 kt today building to 15 to 20 kt with gusts to 25 kt tonight. Waves climbing to 3 to 4 ft, occasionally 5 ft after dark. SCAs run through midday in southern zones and into Friday morning farther north.

Wind & Seas Outlook: Peak winds and gusts hit this afternoon into tonight. Highest Atlantic seas — around 4 ft, occasionally 6 ft — arrive Saturday night on NE 15 to 20 kt. Sunday lays down across the board.

Marine Alerts:

  • Small Craft Advisory — Delaware Bay (N of East Point NJ to Slaughter Beach DE), until 6:00 PM EDT today
  • Small Craft Advisory — Upper/Middle Chesapeake (Pooles Island to North Beach MD), until 12:00 AM EDT May 29
  • Small Craft Advisory — Lower Chesapeake (Smith Point to New Point Comfort VA and south), until 8:00 AM EDT May 29

Best Window to be Out: Sunday — E winds 5 kt becoming SE, bay waves 1 ft, Atlantic seas 4 to 5 ft on a long-period swell.

Worst Window: This afternoon through tonight, when NW gusts peak near 25 kt and Chesapeake waves climb to 5 ft.

Bottom Line: Stay tied up on the bays today unless you've got a capable boat and a short morning window — Sunday is the day to run.
