Small Craft Advisory up across the Chesapeake — southerly channeling cranks winds and chop through Wednesday evening.
Today on the Water: SCAs are active for much of the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac, with the earliest expiring at 10:00 PM EDT tonight and others running through Wednesday afternoon and evening. Southerly flow strengthens through the day and peaks tonight. Showers and thunderstorms are possible later in the period — winds and seas will be higher in and near any storms.
Atlantic Coastal Waters (Lewes → southern VA coast): Manageable today, but the setup deteriorates fast. By Wednesday night, S winds ramp to 20–25 kt with gusts to 30 kt, shifting SW 15–20 kt after midnight. Seas build to 4–5 ft, occasionally 7 ft, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Delaware Bay: S winds around 5 kt early, becoming SE 10–15 kt with gusts to 20 kt this afternoon. Seas 1 foot or less, building to 1–2 ft by afternoon. Wednesday night brings SW 10–15 kt and 2–3 ft chop with showers/storms possible.
Chesapeake Bay & Delmarva-facing Waters: SCA in effect. S winds 15 kt gusting 20 kt tonight, waves building 2–3 ft. Southerly channeling peaks this evening. Wednesday night SW 10–15 kt gusting 20 kt with a chance of showers after midnight.
Wind & Seas Outlook: Peak winds: Wednesday night with gusts to 30 kt offshore. Peak seas: Wednesday night, 4–5 ft and occasionally 7 ft on the Atlantic side.
Marine Alerts:
- Small Craft Advisory — Chesapeake Bay north of Pooles Island, tidal Potomac (Key Bridge to Cobb Island), Patapsco River area — until 10:00 PM EDT today (June 9)
- Small Craft Advisory — Chesapeake Bay from Pooles Island to Drum Point MD and adjacent waters — until 12:00 PM EDT Wednesday (June 10)
- Small Craft Advisory — Chesapeake Bay from Drum Point MD to Smith Point VA, Tangier Sound, Bloodsworth Island waters — until 6:00 PM EDT Wednesday (June 10)
Best Window to be Out: Friday is the clear winner — W winds around 5 kt becoming SW, seas 1 foot or less on the Bay, around 2 ft offshore. If you must go today, get out and back early before the southerly really fills in this afternoon.
Worst Window: Wednesday night — S 20–25 kt gusting 30, seas to 7 ft offshore, storms possible.
Bottom Line: Small craft should stay in on the Chesapeake today, and anyone planning a Wednesday-night offshore run needs to reconsider — wait for Friday.
