Small Craft Advisories remain in effect as northwest winds gust to 20 knots and rougher conditions persist across Bay waters and the Atlantic.
Today on the Water: Small Craft Advisories cover NWS-listed coastal waters until 6:00 AM and Chesapeake Bay waters until 6:00 PM. Northwest winds will ease later today, but the Atlantic remains the roughest water, with seas 3 to 4 feet and occasional 6-foot sets. Radar is quiet across Delmarva, though showers remain in the forecast at times.
Atlantic Coastal Waters (Lewes → southern VA coast): Northwest winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots become west 5 to 10 knots this afternoon. Seas run 3 to 4 feet, occasionally to 6 feet, with a 3-foot south swell at 6 seconds. The best improvement comes this afternoon as winds ease, but the sea state stays unsettled.
Delaware Bay: Data for today is limited for the Bay; tonight brings northwest winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots. Seas build to 2 to 3 feet tonight, with short-period northwest waves in the mix. Showers are possible.
Chesapeake Bay & Delmarva-facing Waters: Northwest winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots become north 5 to 10 knots late today. Waves run 2 to 3 feet, including northwest waves at 3 seconds and southeast waves at 7 seconds. Conditions improve late, but the advisory remains in place through the day.
Wind & Seas Outlook: Today is the peak period for Atlantic seas and northwest gusts; winds diminish somewhat tonight and Thursday. The lighter stretch arrives Friday into Friday night, while south winds increase again Sunday night.
Marine Alerts:
- Small Craft Advisory for NWS-listed coastal waters until 6:00 AM.
- Small Craft Advisory for Chesapeake Bay waters and Tangier Sound until 6:00 PM.
Best Window to be Out: Friday night on the Chesapeake Bay, with southeast winds near 5 knots and waves less than 1 foot.
Worst Window: Stay in Sunday night, when south winds reach 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots, showers possible.
Bottom Line: Hold off on a marginal launch today unless you can handle advisory-level northwest gusts and choppy to rough water.
