Storms moving WNW toward the Delmarva coast are the main marine concern today, with small-craft-advisory-type conditions building later in the weekend and early next week offshore.
Today on the Water: Radar shows several strong cells within 50 miles of Delmarva, including storms southeast of Chincoteague moving WNW toward shore. Lightning is a real risk over open water and along the lower coastal waters. Showers are possible, with another round of storms anticipated late this afternoon and evening. Delaware Bay has NW winds 5 to 10 kt and seas around 2 ft.
Atlantic Coastal Waters (Lewes → southern VA coast): Today-specific wind and sea data is limited for the coastal waters, but showers and thunderstorms are the immediate concern. Radar cells southeast of Chincoteague are moving WNW onshore; avoid open-water exposure while storms are in the area. The next clearly lighter period is Monday night, with seas around 3 ft.
Delaware Bay: NW winds 5 to 10 kt with seas around 2 ft today. A chance of showers is noted early this morning. The bay is more manageable than the ocean today outside of storms, but late-day thunderstorm development can quickly change conditions.
Chesapeake Bay & Delmarva-facing Waters: Data is limited for a detailed Bay wind and wave forecast today. Storms are the operational issue, especially late this afternoon and evening. Special Marine Warnings are possible if storms intensify; lightning and abrupt wind shifts are the concerns for Bay boaters.
Wind & Seas Outlook: The roughest wind period is Sunday, with NE winds 10 to 15 kt and gusts up to 20 kt. Atlantic seas peak Monday at 4 to 5 ft, occasionally to 7 ft. Conditions ease most by Monday night offshore and Tuesday on the Chesapeake Bay.
