For Delmarva, any opportunity would depend on conditions strengthening and holding after dark. If it does materialize, the display would be confined to the northern horizon only—not overhead.

Delmarva Visibility Outlook
For Delaware and the Eastern Shores of Maryland and Virginia, the realistic outcome is northern horizon only. Aurora is never overhead at Delmarva’s roughly 38–39°N latitude. If conditions improve enough for a local sighting, face north and look very low along the horizon, ideally over water, open fields, or another unobstructed northern view.
Naked-eye visibility would be difficult under this setup. A very subtle gray-green glow, a faint pale band, or no obvious color at all would be the more realistic visual result if activity reaches us. Do not expect a bright overhead display.
Phone cameras have a better chance than the unaided eye. Night-mode photos and 3–10 second exposures can routinely capture green, red, or purple color that appears only gray or invisible to the eye. For a marginal Delmarva aurora, a camera-only result is often the most plausible outcome.
Sunset in Salisbury is at 8:16 PM Monday, July 27, with civil twilight ending at 8:46 PM local time. Aurora needs true astronomical darkness to stand out well, so the best chance to check will be well after the remaining twilight fades—not immediately at sunset.
Best Viewing Locations
Cape Henlopen, Delaware, offers open northern exposure over the water and is one of the better options in the state when skies are clear.
Assateague Island in Maryland or Virginia can provide darker skies and fewer northern obstructions, particularly away from developed areas and vehicle lights.
Inland Eastern Shore farmland can also work well, especially where there is a broad northern horizon and distance from town light domes. Always use safe, legal pull-offs or public access areas; do not stop along active roadways.
Wilmington, Salisbury, and the Ocean City boardwalk are too light-polluted to reliably see subtle aurora. Even if a camera detects color, nearby lighting may overwhelm what would otherwise be visible near the horizon.
Photographing the Aurora From Delmarva
Use a sturdy tripod and point the camera north, keeping the horizon low in the frame. On a phone, enable night mode and allow a 3–10 second exposure if the device permits it. Avoid zooming, as it can reduce image quality in low light.
For a manual camera, begin around ISO 1600–3200 with a 3–10 second exposure, use a wide aperture if available, and focus manually near infinity. Take several frames rather than relying on one image. Check the photos for faint color or bands that may not be obvious on the screen at first glance.
What Could Make This Fizzle
This outlook could weaken before nightfall. If the interplanetary magnetic field turns northward from its current negative Bz orientation, Earth’s magnetic field couples less efficiently with the solar wind and auroral activity can fade quickly. A drop in solar-wind speed would also reduce support for a display.
With no active geomagnetic alerts and a forecast Kp peak of only 3.7, there is little margin for a local Delmarva sighting. Any change in SWPC guidance, a weakening solar-wind stream, or downgraded geomagnetic conditions would make a visible result less likely.
Bottom Line
Aurora is possible for Delmarva tonight, but it remains a marginal, medium-confidence watch rather than a strong local viewing forecast. If conditions hold or improve, check a dark location well after twilight, face north, and look low on the northern horizon only. A phone camera using night mode or a 3–10 second exposure may be more likely to detect color than the naked eye. Keep expectations measured and watch for updated space-weather conditions before heading out.
